FREE PATTERN: Little Boy Newsboy Hat

Hello to all my fellow crocheters, especially crocheting mamas!

This one's for you and your little one!

This little hat is SO adorable! I love the brim and the button band together - it is such a perfect hat for a little boy - or, attach a flower and it's great for girls, too! I also love that the brim can be worked right into the main piece, without having to fasten off, weave in ends, and then attach a new section. Way less ends to weave in this way!

This pattern is written for a baby under a year old, but you can easily adjust your hook/yarn weight for a different size. Or just add/subtract increase rows!

Here's the pattern:

Materials
150 yards worsted weight yarn (I used Vanna's Choice)
H (5.00mm) crochet hook
Scissors
Tapestry needle
2 buttons
Thread
Sewing needle (for sewing on buttons)

Notes
1. Stitch counts are in brackets. The ch-2 at the beginning of each round counts as 1 stitch.
2. Do not work in the last stitch of each round (where the ch2 was started). This may mean that you end in the middle of a pattern (for example, you might end on a "2dc in next") - that's okay, as long as you match up with the stitch count.

Hat
Magic ring.
1. 6 sc into ring, sl st to first sc. [6]
2. Ch 2, dc in same, 2dc in each stitch around. Sl st to first dc. [12]
3. Ch 2, dc in same, 2dc in each stitch around. Sl st to first dc. [23]
4. Ch 2, dc in same, dc in next. (2dc in next, dc in next) around. Sl st to first dc. [32]
5. Ch 2, dc in same, dc in next 2. (2dc in next, dc in next 2) around. Sl st to first dc. [42]
6. Ch 2, dc in same, dc in next 4. (2dc in next, dc in next 4) around. Sl st to first dc. [50]
7-12: Ch 2, dc in each stitch around. Sl st to first dc. [50]
13: (front loops only) Ch 2, dc in next 19. 2sc down side of brim, (now both loops again) sc in each stitch around. 2sc up side of brim, sc in next 19. Sl st in next.
Fasten off, weave in ends.

Band:
1. Ch 20. Sc in second chain from hook and each across, working in the horizontal bar underneath the two top loops of the chain stitches.
2. Ch 1, turn. Sc in each stitch across.

Sew buttons onto the band, sew the band onto the hat, and you're done!

Enjoy, and I would love to see pictures of the hat if you make one!

    1. You dc in the dc from the round before, which is the same stitch that you slip stitched into. Hope that helps!

  3. Hello! I really like your blog! I've been crocheting for a little over a year now but it's been in my family for years. I have a 7 month old baby girl and I was wondering if you ever found a pattern for a baby bikini. I've been looking and looking and I cannot find one! :( Just a suggestion! Thank! :)

  4. In round 2, how do you get 23 count? I only get 22, including the ch 2 in the beginning of the round.

    1. I haven't made this hat in a while, so I can't tell you for sure. I would suggest just doing 2dc in the first stitch instead of 1. That should make it all work out okay :)

  5. Very easy to follow. Turned out great!

  6. I'm newer to crocheting and was wondering about step 13 where it says, "2sc down side of brim, (now both loops again) sc in each stitch around. 2sc up side of brim, sc in next 19. Sl st in next."
I guess I'm confused about how the brim is started. Thanks!

    1. So you just ended your 19 dc. Now in the last dc that you just made, work 2 sc down the side of the stitch. Now you are working in two loops again. Sc in each stitch until you reach where you worked the 19 dc. Work 2sc up the side of the stitch as you did before on the other side, the sc across the next 19. Sl st in next and fasten off.

      Hope this helps :)

  7. Hi, I'm having trouble getting started. Any idea why my center is pointy? Also, in round 13, it says "front loops" then "both loops again"...should I assume the entire pattern is worked through both loops until round 13?

  8. So, to make larger versions ( for toddlers and adults) would I continue the increase rows? For instance, if I was making a larger version would my row 7 be Ch 2, dc in same, dc in next 6 (2 dc, dc in next 6) around. Sl st to first dc

Then would I continue increasing using the 2, 4, 6, 8, pattern that is established?
