FREE PATTERN: Faux Knit Headband Crochet Pattern

Hello again, crochet world! I know that is has been (literally) years since I have been active on this blog - but I have not forgotten about you all! Instead, my focus has been on my Etsy shop (xoxocrochet) where I sell crocheted goods...so I have still been busy crocheting and designing, but most of my effort was funneled over there! Now, I am slowing things down there to focus a bit more on this blog and on supplying y'all with some more patterns! I am brimming over with design ideas, but as usual if you have any special requests please do let me know! I am excited to be back with you all.

Today I have for you a classic headband that is undoubtedly not the first like it you have seen, but that I hope inspires you!

 I made the gold headband first (in my size:) and loved how it turned out, and was all ready to throw the pattern out there for you all, when I realized that there are so many other patterns like this out there, so why bother you guys with another one?

Eventually I reached the conclusion that 1) there are NEVER too many crochet patterns out there, and if this one inspires one of you even a little bit, then it is worth it! And 2) so many of these headbands are women's size, but what about your little girls that want to match you? So I sized the headband down a bit and created this white one in a toddler size.

Materials
Worsted Weight Yarn
H (5mm) crochet hook
Yarn needle
Scissors

Pattern
1. FOR WOMEN SIZE: Ch 62 loosely, join with ss to the first stitch so that you have a loop. (62)
FOR TODDLER SIZE: Ch 50 loosely, join with ss to the first stitch so that you have a loop. (50)

2. FOR BOTH SIZES: Ch2, hdc in each chain stitch around, working in the underside of each chain stitch, as pictured. Basically, if you look at the chain stitch from the right side, the stitches form a v-shape, and if you turn it over there is a horizontal bar on the backside of each v-shape. For this round, you are working in the back bar of each v-shape, so that the v is left exposed on the bottom. Hopefully these pictures are helpful!

(Also, if this is too confusing, no worries! Just work in the chain as you normally would. The only difference is that it will look a bit less knit-like on the edge. :)

Finish up that round, working in every chain, then join with ss to the beginning of the round. (62 for women's size, 50 for toddler's size.)

3. Ch 2, hdc in each stitch around, working in the extra bar from the half-double-crochets of the previous round. That is the third loop that is made behind each hdc stitch - see picture. This exposes the two loops from the hdc so that they are both visible, making it look like a knit stitch! Work in each stitch around, joining with ss to beginning of round. (62 for women's size, 50 for toddler's size.)

FOR WOMEN SIZE: 

Repeat row 3 SIX times (or until it reaches your desired height), then:

Ch1, sc in third loop of each hdc from the previous round, join with ss to beginning of round. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. (62)

FOR TODDLER SIZE: 

Repeat row 3 FIVE times (or until it reaches your desired height), then:

Ch1, sc in third loop of each hdc from the previous round, join with ss to beginning of round. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. (50)

At this point, for both sizes, take the long tail you left after fastening off and cinch the headband around the seam by weaving the tail through the joining stitches of each round with the yarn needle. After it is cinched, weave in the loose ends. 

Now we are going to make the piece to cover the seam! 

FOR WOMEN SIZE: 

1. Ch 15, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each stitch across.

2. Ch2, turn. Hdc in the third bar of the hdc stitches from the previous round (like we did throughout the entire headband. Hdc in each stitch across. (13)

3. Ch2, turn. Hdc in the back loop of each stitch across. (13)

Repeat rows 2 and 3 one more time each and fasten off, leaving a long trail.

FOR TODDLER SIZE:

1. Ch 12, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each stitch across.

2. Ch2, turn. Hdc in the third bar of the hdc stitches from the previous round (like we did throughout the entire headband. Hdc in each stitch across. (9)

3. Ch2, turn. Hdc in the back loop of each stitch across. (9)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

FOR BOTH SIZES: Wrap the piece you just made around the cinched area of the headband and, using the long tail and your yarn needle, sew the two ends of the small piece together. Weave in ends after you have securely sewn the piece around the headband, as pictured. 

Voilà, your headband is done!

Perfect for throwing your hair up in a bun and getting things done!

One of my favorite things about these headbands (apart from their stretchiness due to the flexible stitch!) is that you could even turn them inside out and could have an equally beautiful headband! In fact, I think the backside looks like a purl stitch - so really, not matter how you turn this headband, it looks knit! For those of us who have the entirety of our crafting abilities in the crochet realm and who avoid knitting at all costs - this is wonderful news!
